March 25, 2012 – Brunswick, GA

Today found us situated in Brunswick, GA. We ride-shared (car pooled) to Jekyll Island where we had a trolley ride through the grounds of the Jekyll Island Club. The Club was formed in the early 1900s by a group of men who were the presidents of many different companies and were looking for a place where they could summer in opulence. They built this magnificent Clubhouse which is now owned by the State of Georgia and is a grand hotel.

Many “cottages” dote the grounds which were the personal residences of these extremely rich people. A cottage meant a structure of many bedrooms, bathrooms, parlors and dining rooms. They were more like dormitories!

After our trolley tour we enjoyed an AWESOME buffet lunch in the hotel. Words are hard to come by to describe it so you will just have to look at the pictures and drool!!

March 24, 2012 – Traveling from St. Augustine, FL to Brunswick, GA

Today was a travel day where we went from St. Augustine, FL to Brunswick, GA. Along the way we made a stop at the Okeefenokee National Wildlife Refuge. We were treated to a boat trip through a part of the swamp where we were able to see lots of wildlife including alligators and turtles. It was interesting to see the folks from places other than Florida getting so excited about seeing alligators!! The alligators in the swamp are black rather than the green we are familiar with because of the tannin in the water that comes from the peat under the water.

After the boat trip we had a nice lunch prepared by the staff at the Center. Then it was on to Brunswick, GA.
